Airfare Deals...the new rules

So, how can you still get a bargain on a flight these days?

1) Last minute deals are very tough to come by these days...book 21-30 days ahead of time.

2) Use YAPTA which will email you when your chosen flights go down in price. Even after you book so you might be able to get a refund.

3) Airlines are now starting to charge for bags...yes, even the first bag. So, don't check bags! Here's how...

4) Sign up for the email newsletters of all airlines who fly from your home airport. Deals abound.

5) Use Kayak and smartertravel to search for flights initially, then check the low-budget airlines like southwest and jetblue. Based on your findings, go to the airlines direct website and book it. NEVER book on travelocity or expedia who are rarely cheaper under any circumstance...we hear horror stories all the time.

6) Be Flexible. Fly on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and on actual holidays if possible rather than 1-2 days prior or after which are much more expensive.

7) Travel in the offseason such as Europe in Winter and the Caribbean in the Fall (Hurricane Season)

8) Don't have the time or patience to do the above? Is it too much hastle for you? Make one 2 minute call or email to a travel agent. Airlines do not pay commissions so travel agents charge a fee...generally $20 to $40 on average. Studies show that over 90% of the time travel agents found better rates...sometimes fares that were not available online. Whet Travel does not currently offer airfare unless it is part of a package, but we can refer you to an outstanding agent who we use personally.
